Pathology Residency Program Overview
Program Highlights
The University of Toledo AP/CP Pathology Residency is a small program committed to high-quality resident education in clinical service, teaching, and research.
Our training emphasizes hands-on experience with close faculty supervision. Residents benefit from:
- Direct faculty guidance during initial surgical pathology grossing
- Patient interaction and fine needle aspiration practice in cytopathology
- Daily one-on-one teaching in clinical pathology
- Extensive teaching collections and archives in surgical pathology including renal pathology and neuropathology
To broaden clinical exposure, residents rotate at partner institutions:
- Forensic Pathology: Lucas County Coroner’s Office
- Pediatric Pathology: Akron Children’s Hospital
- Dermatopathology: Pinkus Laboratories
- Blood Banking, Microbiology and Flow Cytometry: ProMedica Toledo Hospital
Our graduates consistently match into highly regarded fellowships and secure competitive employment opportunities.
Teaching & Education
Teaching is a core priority for both faculty and residents. Our small program fosters daily interaction across the department. Key features include:
- A robust series of didactics and interdisciplinary conferences, including general and subspecialty Tumor Boards where residents present cases with faculty support
- Active involvement in undergraduate medical education, with residents leading weekly small-group sessions alongside faculty lectures
- A popular elective clerkship in pathology for 3rd- and 4th-year medical students, with 10–20 new clerks rotating every two weeks. Residents play an active role in teaching and mentoring these students.
Research Opportunities
All residents are expected to participate in original research. Support includes:
- Monthly research conferences focused on resident projects
- Didactics on practical approaches to research
