Professor of Astronomy
Director of °µÍø½ûÇø Astrophysical Research Center
J.D. Smith’s research focuses on the physical conditions of interstellar material as a tool for understanding galaxy evolution. He is using infrared telescopes to dissect elusive smoke-like material floating between stars and planets in the M101 Pinwheel Galaxy that might be the precursors to life in the universe. Smith also leads °µÍø½ûÇø’s Lowell Discovery Telescope partnership.
Expertise: Galaxy Evolution, Gas and Dust in Interstellar Matter, Abundance of Heavy Elements, Infrared Instrumentation
